How to Choose the Right Driver

Start with your handicap and ball-striking

If you're above a 15 handicap or frequently miss the sweet spot, forgiveness is your first priority. A high-MOI, deep-CG driver keeps your worst swings in play. Don't buy a tour driver because it looks impressive — it will cost you distance and fairways.

Match shaft flex to swing speed

Under 85 mph: Senior or Regular. 85–95 mph: Regular. 95–105 mph: Stiff. 105–115 mph: Stiff or X-Stiff. 115+ mph: X-Stiff. Playing the wrong flex costs distance and hurts dispersion more than almost any other equipment decision.

Understand your miss pattern

If you slice consistently, a draw-bias driver with fixed heel weighting will keep the ball on the planet while you work on your swing. If you miss both ways, high MOI is more useful than draw bias — a draw-biased driver can make a hook worse.

Don't ignore the used market

A one or two year old driver from a reputable retailer like 2nd Swing performs within a few yards of the latest model and costs $200–300 less. The best-value driver is almost always a recent pre-owned premium head.
